Quickly Improve Your Day: Throw Something

Throw something.

Yep, life throws us some curve balls.

You can sing “You can’t always get what you want” but that’s not very satisfying.

Throwing something? That feels pretty good.

And so this week, I joined a daring group of women to throw axes at wood targets.

That’s right; sharpened axes.

This is a real thing.

I have never attempted nor thought of throwing an axe until my friend Sue Boehm came up with this dare and invited friends and clients. Apparently, it’s a Canadian sport that has recently come to Philly. Anyway, our gathering was planned long before the election, but I must say, it felt like good timing.

It took us all a while to get the hang of it. It’s kind of like winding up to pitch a baseball but you take that axe behind your head and you toss it off while throwing your hands behind you. Man, when that axe lands in that wood target it feels kind of awesome.

The closer your axe is to the bullseye, the more points you get.

Yes, it sounds ludicrous.

Why throw an axe at a target when you can march in the street or cry in your pillow, or just do a primal scream? Because it’s a harmless way to let off steam. Your brain has to concentrate on some new foreign physical motion. Because you feel endorphins rushing through you which we will need to just feel better in general and realise we’re going to be okay.

Hey, maybe we needed a good shake up, wake up call.

No matter what’s going on with the country, whether your side won or lost, our day is in our control. We get to say if we are going to be kind to strangers, whether we will be there for our friends and family, whether we will stand up for what we believe, whether we will do things that improve our lives and the lives of others. Yes, YOU get to decide that.

In the land of YOU, there are no electoral votes. Just you. You choose.

So what will it be? Be afraid? Be anxious? Or own your day!

Do something new that makes you feel alive and courageous and true to you. Meanwhile, a little harmless axe throwing (in the proper sporting environment) doesn’t hurt either.
